[2010 Jul] NTU SCBE Orientation
NTU SCBE NUEVE 6 Crazy Cups Experience NTU’s School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering organised its freshmen orientation camp from 5th to 9th July 2010 to give new students a taste of the university experience. As part of the camp, students had to undergo an overnight Amazing Race that not only tested their physical endurance but also their mental prowess. Of course, all these were a subset of an overall effort to let the new students have fun as well as bond closely within their approximately twenty-member orientation groups. The Crazy Cups Station was the last obstacle each orientation group had to clear before they could receive the clue to their overnight accommodation. The station required three members to finish stacking and unstacking a three cup formation, another three members to finish stacking and unstacking a six-cup formation, and finally twenty members to finish stacking and unstacking a twelve-cup formation. The entire sequence had to be performed without mistake within a time limit of 240 seconds. Having already practised countless times themselves, the controller that led each orientation group throughout the Amazing Race demonstrated effortlessly the correct technique to accomplish the task at hand(and yes, the time limit was tried and accomplished beforehand). However, possibly due to the fatigue accumulated from running around stations and performing their individual tasks throughout the day, most orientation groups hit a roadblock while trying to clear this task quickly. They struggled to even complete the entire sequence without mistake, let alone meet the time limit. Clearly this was a task that was impossible for them to simply bulldoze through. After a quick discussion, the Amazing Race Assistant Chief Programmers decided to cut the students some slack. They would be allowed to proceed if they could complete the sequence without mistake with no time limits. This would only apply if they had stayed at the station for one hour already. The new students learnt quickly. Instead of attempting to beat the clock, they practised for accuracy so that they could achieve “The Perfect Set”, affectionately termed as completing the entire sequence without mistakes and no time limit. This was also not exactly smooth-sailing. Some students seemed just too tired to concentrate. But with the cheering and moral support of their peers, all teams managed to complete this task before the designated cut-off timing. The Crazy Cups Experience was definitely unforgettable for the new students, as probably none had ever tried their hands at such a sport. The novelty also probably ensured a level-playing ground for all orientation groups at this particular station of the Amazing Race. It was trying times for those that had a bit of coordination problems, and definitely resulted in many amusing episodes, but in the end, the closeness of the orientation groups and their strong team spirit prevailed. No single member was going to let their entire group down by giving up. This invisible bond being built would remain throughout the rest of their university lives, and longer. The memories would also be revived at future gatherings, and especially the next freshmen orientation camp, where these juniors of ours would have become seniors themselves, sharing their cheerful anecdotes to the future juniors. They would refer to this poignantly, as the “Crazy Cup Experience”.

[2010 Jul] Qiaonan Primary stacks!

Another batch of students completed the 15-week Crazy-Cups Sport-Stacking CCA.

The students performed really well with more than half the class achieving the Orange Belt or better in their Gradings.

The class was challenged to achieve a Green belt on the last day of class and Janine responded with an impressive 11.7 seconds to become the first student to get a Green Belt in this CCA! Janine was awarded with a multi-color Crazy-Cups sets.

5 students were awarded with prizes for their outstanding performances during the 15-week CCA - for their consistently good performance as well as best improvement over time.
